MLIS Student Learning Goal 2

Understand the essential nature of information and its relevance to our diverse society.

Outcome 2a: Describe various definitions and concepts of information.

The Visual Resources Association (VRA) Core 4.0 exercise from LIS 882: Metadata for Digital Resources asks the student to create a VRA Core XML record for an art object of the student’s choosing. The exercise includes two steps; the first step is to gather the metadata information for the art object and assign it to the various VRA element definitions. The second step is to compile the element information into an XML record, a specific format to describe the information about the art object, using the VRA metadata standard.

Outcome 2b: Explain the impact of information policies on intellectual freedom, access, literacy, information behavior, and other aspects of library and information science.

The topic paper from LIS 707: Leadership, Marketing and Strategic Communication consists of an in-depth discussion on safety issues within public libraries in regard to conflict management skills and code of conduct policies. Safety concerns have a direct impact on all aspects of the library for both staff and patrons alike. If a library does not feel safe, patrons may be reluctant to visit or participate in library events which effects access, intellectual freedom, information behavior, literacy and more. Unfortunately, during modern times, library leaders and management must take preventative steps towards maintaining a safe library environment to ensure that access is protected for all patrons. The paper reflects on the information provided in research materials about public library safety and conflict management and makes suggestions for library management.

Outcome 2c: Develop appropriate responses to assessed information needs within diverse communities/organizations.

The library service evaluation paper from LIS 708: Evidence-Based Planning, Management, and Decision Making seeks to provide guidelines for a proposed evaluation of library services at a particular library. The student does not conduct an actual evaluation but creates a plan for evaluation based on information found on the library’s website, class text or research materials. My assignment is based on attracting and retaining new users from the community at a public library system in order to meet the goals listed in the library’s strategic plan. The library service evaluation paper provides additional details on the methods of evaluation including data collection, surveys and observation among others.
