Effectively communicate and collaborate to deliver, market, and advocate for library and information services.
Outcome 5a: Apply marketing and/or advocacy principles to demonstrate and promote the value of libraries and information agencies.
The topic paper from LIS 771: Public Libraries demonstrates the value of libraries for a specific age group; teens. The paper addresses some problems that teens may have in accessing the public library and provides possible solutions. Guided by values set by the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA), these best practices for serving teens include outreach, programming, and teen volunteers, to name a few. Furthermore, teen volunteers or advisory boards, among others, involve the teen patrons with marketing projects that benefit the library, but more importantly, help the teen population.
Outcome 5b: Demonstrate effective professional communication to achieve common understanding as an individual or in group settings.
This reading response from LIS 771: Public Libraries places the student in the shoes of the library director. It asks what the current or new library director should do to avoid confusion over which tasks are carried out by the director and which tasks are the responsibility of the library board. While not actually communicating with the described parties, I decided to focus on perhaps the communication involved with being a library director. Communication is especially important for the library director because they oversee the library. It is crucial that the director fully understands their part and the parts of the other interested parties mentioned above to ensure a smoothly run and successful library.
Outcome 5c: Demonstrate leadership principles in an educational, professional, or community context.
The leadership skills discussion prompt from LIS 707: Leadership, Marketing and Strategic Communication poses an important question for any librarian; what leadership principles the individual would like to improve. For this assignment, I decided to reflect on experiences at my library job in which I felt I could have improved my conflict resolution skills. To complete the assignment, I explained how some role models have responded to difficult situations and identified how I wish to enhance my own skills. Finally, I briefly touched on some leadership opportunities that have come up at my library job.
