MLIS Student Learning Goal 4

Synthesize theory and practice within a dynamic, evolving, and diverse information environment.

Outcome 4a: Apply library and information science theories, principles, and research to professional practice.

This document is a plan for a sensory storytime that I presented at the library where I work. Sensory storytime is wonderful for all children, but provides additional support for neurodiverse children. The program applied many tips and tools from two webinars as well as information learned in LIS 804: Serving Children with Disabilities. The first sensory storytime was successful, and I have since presented many more of these programs. Sensory friendly programming is a relatively new concept in the library science field.

Outcome 4b: Evaluate current and emerging technologies for information capture, organization, dissemination, access, and/or curation to meet the variety of information needs of diverse communities.

The Artificial Intelligence (AI) discussion post from LIS 882: Metadata for Digital Resources involves the student in a current debate in the library world; the emergence of AI in metadata and other library technology and services. My discussion post about the topic of AI use in libraries acknowledges both the successes and shortcomings of the new technology in various use cases, including the use of Chat GPT in reference services, and AI searching tools. Since AI is becoming a part of everyday life, librarians must strive to incorporate the technology in a reasonable manner than maintains the integrity of the information institution.

Outcome 4c: Demonstrate teaching and learning principles in relation to professional practice.

The workshop for adults presentation from LIS 720: Picture Books and Emergent Literacy expects the student to design a library program for adults (caregivers, educators, etc.) about a child-relevant topic. The presentation is an explanation or walk-through of how the planned program would run at a library, including a pamphlet or other handout. For my presentation, I chose to highlight rhymes, activities and stories to help make bedtime a better experience for both caregivers and children. The workshop plan provides interactive examples using the knowledge I gained from the course so that caregivers can learn techniques and ideas for helping and engaging their child with bedtime.
