MLIS Student Learning Goal 3

Navigate, curate and create information across the spectrum of human records.

Outcome 3a: Design resources or tools that facilitate access to information.

The preschool sample storytime presentation from LIS 720: Picture Books and Emergent Literacy requests the student create a plan for a preschool storytime library program and record a brief presentation of how the storytime would be presented. Due to time constraints, I did not read all three books but displayed the titles of the selected books for the storytime as well as handouts I prepared for the caregivers to help them access the books, rhymes, craft, activities and recipe that would be discussed at the storytime program. Storytime provides access to materials and activities that families may not have at home and sets an example of interactive ways to enhance story-reading at home. After the program, caregivers could review the books again, read the rhymes together with the child or make a themed snack to further extend the child’s learning and engagement with the topic.

Outcome 3b: Utilize resources or tools to manage information.

The Visual Resources Association (VRA) Core 4.0 exercise from LIS 882: Metadata for Digital Resources asks the student to create a VRA Core XML record for an art object of the student’s choosing. The exercise includes the usage of two tools to manage information. XML is a specific format used to describe the information, while VRA is a metadata standard that guides how the information should be included in a catalog record. The record proves useful to the museum employees where the work of art resides, as well as to art lovers who want to learn more about the piece.

Outcome 3c: Evaluate resources or tools that manage and facilitate access to information.

The booktalk gallery presentation from LIS 721: Library Materials for Children advertises a selection of four children’s books based on a chosen theme for a target age or grade range. A booktalk is a video presentation in which the student discusses the chosen books and provides a short summary of each title for reader’s advisory. The booktalk video is a tool that children or caregivers can use for book recommendations from librarians or other information professionals. These videos are designed to reach the intended audience, so it is important to gear not only the books, but the summary and video style to the age group you want to reach. Booktalks are able to be shared through numerous channels such as library websites, social media pages or in-library monitors.
